OUR TIERRA LIVRi NUESTRA TIERRA LIVRI

OUR TIERRA LIVRI is a public art installation rooted in acknowledging and understanding the history of gentrification that includes the systematic and recurring land and housing discrimination that continues today. Created on an empty lot that is part of the Dudley Neighors Inc. Land Trust, the panels of lettering that read “Our Tierra Livri” or Our Liberated Land, each word in English, Spanish, and Cape Verdean Creole. The project centers noncommercial and indigenous conception of land as being held by those who live there; this type of land ‘ownership’ shows a way forward in terms of sustaining and nourishing our communities. Our Tierra Livri acknowledges the struggle endured by Dudley residents to reclaim and build upon the land which they, their children and families can live and thrive.

NUESTRA TIERRA LIVRI es una instalación de arte público arraigada en el reconocimiento y la comprensión de la historia de la gentrificación que incluye la discriminación sistemática y recurrente de la tierra y la vivienda que continúa en la actualidad. Creados en un terreno baldío que es parte de Dudley Neighbors Inc. Land Trust, los paneles de letras que dicen "Nuestra Tierra Livri" o Nuestra Tierra Liberada, cada palabra en inglés, español y criollo caboverdiano. El proyecto centra la concepción indígena y no comercial de la tierra como propiedad de quienes viven allí; este tipo de "propiedad" de la tierra muestra un camino a seguir en términos de sostener y nutrir nuestras comunidades. Nuestra Tierra Livri reconoce la lucha que soportaron los residentes de Dudley para recuperar y construir sobre la tierra en la que ellos, sus hijos y familias pueden vivir y prosperar.

I incorporate textiles in my public art works, and drape them as alter pieces, where migrants can see themselves reflected and also find faith and hope in these images. These works where inspired by Amalia Mesa Bains writings on ‘Domesticana’ and the altar in the home, women creating place in their new environment and putting together spaces where we can hope, pray, and practice their spirituality. Healing and spiritual public spaces are important in Mexican American border communities, and I hope to keep expanding this work into public space to create spaces of healing and reflection.

Incorporó textiles en mis obras de arte público, y los cubro como piezas de altar, donde los migrantes pueden verse reflejados y también encontrar fe y esperanza en estas imágenes. Estas obras se inspiraron en los escritos de Amalia Mesa Bains sobre "Domesticana" y el altar en el hogar, mujeres que crean un lugar en su nuevo entorno y crean espacios donde pueden esperar, orar y practicar su espiritualidad. Los espacios públicos sanadores y espirituales son importantes en las comunidades fronterizas mexicano-americanas, y espero seguir expandiendo este trabajo al espacio público para crear espacios de sanación y reflexión.
